Gardaí in Limerick are searching for a five-man gang that escaped with a large sum of cash after an armed robbery at a family home in the Galbally area.

Five armed and masked raiders forced their way into the house at around 9pm last night.

The occupants - a local businessman, his wife and two young children - were locked into a room before the thieves fled the scene with around €14,000.

The cash had been in a floor safe that the raiders forced the businessman to open.

Gardaí temporarily set up roadblocks last night in an effort to intercept the gang, but they have yet to be found.

The scene of the robbery has been preserved for technical examination and footage from security cameras at the house is also being reviewed.
