Coveney: Decision soon on whether more Irish troops will go to Syria

Minister for Defence Simon Coveney has said says he will decide by the end of the month on whether more Irish troops should be sent to Syria.

Mr Coveney said the UN would decide next week on whether the peacekeeping mission in the Golan Heights needed an overhaul.

He said the UN Security Council woulddecide on whether to restructure the mission, which will then allow him to decide whether Ireland would continue to take part.

The Minister said a restructured UN mission would go a long way to keeping peace in the Golan Heights region.

"It's just a kilometre wide in some places; much wider in others. Some UN posts have had to be abandoned because there's an active civil war going on," he said. "By restructuring where the UN has its posts, we can de-risk the situation significantly."
