McAteer targets Rovers return

Sunderland captain Jason McAteer has set his sights on former club Blackburn as he attempts to fight his way back from another injury nightmare.

Sunderland captain Jason McAteer has set his sights on former club Blackburn as he attempts to fight his way back from another injury nightmare.

The 32-year-old Ireland international has played only twice for the Black Cats this season after suffering a hamstring injury.

However, he is now back in full training and hoping to return to action for the reserves against Blackburn, the club he left to join Sunderland in October 2001, at Morecambe next week.

“I know that I have to take my time and make sure I’m right,” he said.

“There is a bit to go yet, but the day when I can enjoy playing again is a bit nearer.

“I’ve watched the lads for almost all the season and have not been able to help out on the park. It’s been frustrating.”
