Northern Alliance gears up for Kabul offensive

The Northern Alliance says it is boosting its troop strength in the strategic Panjshir Valley.

The Northern Alliance says it is boosting its troop strength in the strategic Panjshir Valley.

It is bringing in thousands of additional fighters and weapons to the area north of Kabul.

US jets are currently attacking Taliban positions in the area in order to help the Alliance advance on the capital.

Taliban positions in the area have been hit for four straight days.

Near an opposition military post outside the town of Bagram, US planes swooped down to strike, drawing return fire visible from over two miles away.

Saeed Mir Shah, a 24-year-old fighter with the Northern Alliance, says he counted 10 bombs in two hours over Bagram. The area around Bagram is partly held by the Taliban and partly by the alliance.

At a front line north of Kabul, Taliban soldiers fired missiles at US jets roaring overhead.

They also fired artillery and mortar at opposition forces a few hundred yards away.

Opposition commander Haji Bari said the Northern Alliance is bringing in the new troops and weapons to Panjshir in anticipation of a green light to march on Kabul.

"We're waiting for the order," said Bari, deputy brigade commander in the Rabat district.
