Thousands of speeding prosecutions are in doubt today following a court's ruling that some Garda speed guns may not comply with legal regulations.
The High Court ruled laser guns used by gardaí to detect speeding offences do not comply with the Road Traffic Act because they are incapable of making a permanent record of the speed.
The matter had been referred to the High Court during a District Court case in Carrick-on-Shannon.
The District Court judge indicated he was planning to dismiss a speeding case against a man allegedly caught doing 63mph in a 40mph zone.
