Thailand: Tourists die in cave tragedy

Six German tourists and a Thai tour guide were killed after being swept away by flash floods while exploring a cave at in southern Thailand, police said today.

Six German tourists and a Thai tour guide were killed after being swept away by flash floods while exploring a cave at in southern Thailand, police said today.

The victims were trekking through the Khao Sok national park in Surathani province yesterday, when heavy rainfall caused flash floods that sent water surging through the cave, which was near a waterfall, Thai police say.

“The tourists were inside the cave and didn’t know what was happening outside,” a police spokesman said.

“They were trapped inside the cave.”

Rescue teams worked through the night trying to save the group.

A German man and a Thai man were still believed missing, police said.

The German victims were identified as three women, two men and a child.

A Belgian tourist was killed by a flash flood in the same cave several years ago.
