Gardai in the west are clamping down on law-breaking motorists today, with 80 checkpoints being set up across four counties.

Gardai in the west are clamping down on law-breaking motorists today, with 80 checkpoints being set up across four counties.

The operation is being concentrated on counties Sligo, Mayo, Galway and Roscommon amid concerns by gardai at the number of motorists driving untaxed and uninsured vehicles.

300 gardai are involved and vehicles will be checked for mechanical and other defects. Five hour checkpoints are being set up in key strategic locations, with the objective of enforcing the Road Traffic Act.

The move will also see an increase in the visible presence of uniformed gardai in each district, which will allow monitoring of movements of criminals in the area.
