The Minister for Health has published a new strategy paving the way for an electronic patient database and centralised waiting lists.

The National Health Information Strategy will cost €475 million over the next five years. Minister Martin has said it will benefit doctors and patients.

“If we are going to have an effective health service we have to get the information underpinning it right or it will not be as effective as it should be.

Clearly in terms of the implementation of the broader health strategy in terms of effectiveness and indeed value for money there is also a very strong focus on this strategy and on the needs of patients and of people.”
