A man has been jailed for life after being convicted of shooting down a boxing coach outside his home in Cork.

A man has been jailed for life after being convicted of shooting down a boxing coach outside his home in Cork.

John Collins (aged 51), of Francis St., Rathealy Road, Fermoy, Co Cork, had pleaded not guilty to murdering John Mahon on the 12th February 2006.

Mr Collins also pleaded guilty to two other charges relating to the possession of a shotgun and ammunition.

Mr Justice Kevin O'Higgins sentenced Collins to the mandatory life imprisonment and backdated sentence to February 13, 2006.

The jury of six women and six men took over six hours to reach their unanimous verdict at the Central Criminal Court.
