Former football boss Pat Gilroy appointed as Dublin hurling manager

Former Dublin All-Ireland football winning manager Pat Gilroy had been chosen to manage the capital's senior hurlers, writes Stephen Barry .

Details of the full management team will be announced shortly, but former Galway boss Anthony Cunningham is rumoured to be included in Gilroy's team.

Gilroy's appointment on a three-year term ends a process which began with Ger Cunningham stepping down by mutual consent in July.

An announcement was delayed a further week due to "unforeseen circumstances" which prevented a name being put to a county board meeting last week.

Mattie Kenny was understood to be the other candidate for the position, having managed Cuala to become the first Dublin club to win the All-Ireland title earlier this year.

The Dubs exited the championship this summer after heavy losses to Galway and Tipperary sandwiched a win over Laois.

Cunningham's three years in charge were marked by the departures of many star players from the squad, including 2013 All-Stars Danny Sutcliffe and Peter Kelly.

It leaves Gilroy facing big decisions over who to attempt to tempt back to the panel for 2018.
