FA reject red card appeals

Blackburn’s Tugay and Tottenham’s Hossam Ghaly have had their claims for wrongful dismissal rejected by an independent disciplinary commission, the Football Association have announced.

Blackburn’s Tugay and Tottenham’s Hossam Ghaly have had their claims for wrongful dismissal rejected by an independent disciplinary commission, the Football Association have announced.

Both midfielders were sent off during Sunday’s 1-1 Premiership draw at Ewood Park.

Tugay, 36, was shown a red card for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity and will now serve a one-match suspension as a result.

The Turkish midfielder opened the scoring for Rovers before his professional foul on Ghaly led to the visitors’ equaliser with Jermain Defoe scoring from the penalty spot.

Egyptian star Ghaly, 24, was sent off after he appeared to elbow Michael Gray late in the game. He will serve a three-match suspension.

The red cards angered Tottenham boss Martin Jol and Blackburn manager Mark Hughes, who criticised referee Phil Dowd’s performance after the match. Jol mistakenly believed Dowd had sent him off.

Claims from Sheffield Wednesday regarding Chris Brunt and Wade Small were also rejected. Both players were sent off during Wednesday’s defeat at Coventry on Saturday.
