A rape trial jury failed to reach a verdict after just over three hours deliberations at the Central Criminal Court and was sent to a hotel overnight by Mr Justice Diarmuid O'Donavan.

It was day-eight of the trial of the man accused of raping a 27-year-old woman in an alleyway in her home town in Co Cork as she returned home from a disco.

The 35-year-old man is denying that he raped and buggered the woman on September 3, 2000.

The jury of five women and seven men will resume its deliberations at 10:30am tomorrow.
