AFL bosses urge clubs to support International Rules
Australian Football bosses have urged the 16 AFL clubs to support the International Rules series or risk it going to the wall.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said that the recent series in Ireland was "poorly supported" by clubs and that the hybrid game series could be in danger.
Demetriou issued the warning to Aussie Rules managers, coaches and club chief executives last week. The topic is due to be raised again at a meeting of club presidents and chief executives.
Ireland defeated Australia in both games of the series at Croke Park this year as attendances soared.
Demetriou told the clubs they could miss the chance to market and develop the game internationally.
The AFL boss criticised the lack of enthusiasm for the series — 17 All-Australian players were unavailable for the trip and as many, if not more, turned down the chance to play.
