X-Files creator Chris Carter has cast doubt on whether there will be a ninth series of the show.

He said that the series currently being shown in the US was a transitional one and that new cast member Robert Patrick had given the show some new "creative juice".

He said if they can find a reason to keep doing the show creatively, they will.

"There are great plans but we're not quite there yet," he said.

"David Duchovny has become a part-timer, but he does return for several episodes."
