Nearly 70 staff suspended over lewd e-mail featuring Bart Simpson involved in sex acts have been told their jobs are safe.

Nearly 70 staff suspended over lewd e-mail featuring Bart Simpson involved in sex acts have been told their jobs are safe.

The workers at Royal & Sun Alliance's Liverpool office have received written warnings after disciplinary hearings into the offending images.

But ten more employees who were sacked after the e-mail was discovered are understood not to have been reinstated . They are thought to be appealing about the decision.

Paul Atkinson, head of communications at Royal & Sun Alliance, said: "There has been a range of actions taken but the vast majority of those involved have received a written warning.

"This indicates that the matter is taken very seriously.

"Some may see a cartoon as a bit of fun but I am sure most would recognise that this sort of thing is not acceptable at work."

The company last week defended its decision to dismiss its employees, saying the e-mail went "well beyond questionable adaptions of cartoons".

Mr Atkinson added that the disciplinary hearings had taken place over the last few weeks and that the suspended workers had been reinstated on a gradual basis.
