Unions to press Irish Ispat to prevent plant closure
A last ditch effort to save the former Irish Steel plant in Cork gets underway later today.
SIPTU, which represents the majority of workers at Irish Ispat, is to meet management at the plant in a bid to have the decision to close overturned.
The company announced the cessation of operations, with a resulting loss of 400 jobs, on Friday.
It blamed continuing losses, believed to be running at £750,000 a month, for the closure.
Irish Ispat bought Irish Steel from the Government for £1 five years ago.
SIPTU briefed its members on the situation over the weekend and has said it does not accept that the decision is irreversible.
