Ireland’s Olive Loughnane, the silver medallist in Berlin, had to settle for 16th this time in one hour 34.02 seconds in the women’s 20 kilometres walk at the World Championships in Daegu today.

The 2009 silver medallist struggled at times in the humid conditions and finished four minutes off the lead.

Deirdre Ryan competes in the high jump while Alistair Cragg competes in the 5000 metres this morning.

Russia’s Olga Kaniskina was the first of the 50-strong field to cross the line to win gold.

England's Jo Jackson finished 23rd in one hour 35.32 seconds in humid conditions in Gukchae-Bosang Memorial park.

“I found the conditions fine, I keep myself really well cooled and hydrated,” said Jackson, who was disqualified at the World Championships in Berlin two years ago.

“I went into this with a bit of a knee niggle and it’s caused a bit of trouble with my technique, but I wouldn’t use it as an excuse.

“It was nice to get rid of the Berlin memories but I would have liked to have been in with the front group. I kept fighting all the way through, I didn’t give in.”

The walk was the only action on day five of the championships.
