Education, transport push inflation up to 2.9%

Ireland’s inflation rate increased to 2.9% last month according to figures released today by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

The CSO said average prices increased by 0.2% during the month, bringing the inflation rate up from 2.7% to 2.9%.

It said the most notable monthly increases were a 1.5% increase in education costs, a 0.9% increase in transport costs and a 0.8% increase in the cost of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels.

On an annual basis, the CSO said the price cost of housing, water, electricity gas and other fuels had increased by 8% in the year to November, while transport costs had increased by 6.3% and education costs by 5.4%.

Health costs were also up 5.4% in the year, while the prices charged by restaurants and hotels increased by 4.5% and the cost of alcohol and tobacco was up 3.1%.
