Two arrested in connection with Westmeath kidnap

Police in the North have arrested two men in connection with a punishment-style attack on a couple who were abducted from their home in Co Westmeath last night.

Police in the North have arrested two men in connection with a punishment-style attack on a couple who were abducted from their home in Co Westmeath last night.

The couple, aged 38 and 40, were kidnapped from their house in the Clonmore area of Mullingar just after 8pm.

They were then transported 120 miles to Derry, where both were badly beaten and the man was shot in both ankles.

The two victims, who are originally from the North, are recovering in hospital today after being found in the Creggan estate at around 5am.

Their home in Mullingar has been sealed off pending technical examination later today, while a house in the Brandywell area of Derry is also being searched.
