An unidentified European tourist died after being crushed by a falling boulder on Sydney’s northern beaches, police said today.

The man, thought to be either from Germany or Austria, was walking with a male companion at Bangalley Headland taking photographs of the sunrise on a cliff top when the large boulder they climbed onto gave way.

One man landed safely while the other was hit by a large rock, said a spokesman for the emergency rescue services.

“Rescue teams searched for over an hour and found the man unfortunately deceased,” the spokesman said. “They are believed to be German tourists who were taking photos of the sunrise.”

But a police spokesman said the tourist could have been from Austria and authorities were attempting to contact his relatives.
