Support groups say drug revelations 'not a surprise'

Drug support services say they are not surprised by revelations that cocaine use now crosses all sections of Irish society.

Drug support services say they are not surprised by revelations that cocaine use now crosses all sections of Irish society.

A 'Prime Time Investigates' programme last night aired secretly-filmed footage of young men and women taking the drug in a number of well-known pubs and clubs.

It also found cocaine traces in 92% of 370 licenced premises where tests were carried out.

Meanwhile, reports this morning say five young men are critically ill in hospital following suspected drug overdoses.

Tony Geoghan, director of Merchants Quay Ireland, says he hopes society will begin to realise the dangers associated with cocaine.

He also says the only people prosecuted for drug misuse tend to be poorer people rather than the middle classes who are also deeply involved in the cocaine scene.
