Twenty-six people are feared dead in landslides in India.

Rescuers in the Rudraprayag district of Uttaranchal are trying to reach survivors after flash floods caused mudslides.

The landslides have cut off at least four villages and rescuers are trying to reach people in buildings which have been flattened.

"Our reports say at least ten people were killed and 16 missing in the landslides that hit four villages in Rudraprayag" said Director General of Police Ashok Kant Sharan.

He said 26 houses had been destroyed and 30 animals killed. The landslides also left stranded more than 850 pilgrims who were on their way to a shrine, according to reports.

Uttaranchal Chief Secretary Madhukar Gupta said despite heavy rains, the relief and rescue operation is continuing and the government has provided 40 tents to shelter those left homeless.
