Pensioner walks his way to health

An 88-year-old Briton walks 11 miles a day.

William Thwaite, who was diagnosed with diabetes eight years ago, used to trek for around 14 miles a day in an attempt to keep slim.

He told the Gazette and Herald newspaper: “I had a heart attack 14 years ago about the time my wife died and then I was told I had diabetes. That came as a surprise because I have always been quite slim – I still have a 32in waist – and you associate diabetes with obesity.

“I knew that getting lots of exercise was the thing to do when you have diabetes so I started walking.

"I used to do up to 14 miles a day but I’m not as young as I used to be so I keep it down to 11 miles."

William is now on track to have walked the equivalent of the earth's circumference by September 9.
