28 women compete for Rose of Tralee title
Women from around the world take to the stage today in Ireland’s number one pageant to battle for the crown of Rose of Tralee.
The 46th Rose begins today with contestants from as far afield as Dubai and Australia up against Ulster Rose Michaela Harte and Irish dancing champion and English Rose Angela Crowley.
The Kerry town has planned for more than 200,000 visitors for the four-day festival with a party atmosphere of dancing, singing and music filling the streets.
The event comes to a head on the Tuesday night when one of 28 the contestants, 11 of whom are homegrown, will be crowned the winner, live on national television.
Each Rose must complete 36 official engagements with their escorts in tow, each of whom have been picked for their maturity and good humour.
The winning Rose will be handed a masterpiece trophy, a makeover for her home, and a year’s supply of Newbridge silverware jewellery.
But the real prize, as well as the title, is a one-off designer tiara while all finalists will get a selection of jewellery.
