David Beckham today spoke of his gratitude to Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson – but admitted their relationship had been soured by his move to Real Madrid.

Talking in Madrid at the launch of his new book ‘My Side’ Beckham said: “There has been a lot picked out about Sir Alex, but if you read the book there are a lot more positive than negative things about him.

“Headlines can be misleading but I spent 15 years being managed by him and he gave me and other young players the chance to be who we are.”

Asked whether Beckham‘s transfer to Spain had caused a rift in their relationship, the England captain replied: “That happens in all jobs – but now I have moved on and Sir Alex has moved on.”
