Protestors stormed into the offices of the bank formerly known as Anglo Irish today to show opposition to the €1.25bn being paid out to bondholders.

An uilleann piper from Clare, John Reid, played the air of 'The Boys of Kilmichael' as about 25 people marched into the offices on Anglesea Street, before chanting “power to the people”.

The protest was organised by a coalition of groups including Occupy Cork, the Anti-Household Charge Campaign, the Ballyhea protestors and left-wing parties with councilors Ted Tynan and Mick Barry taking part.

Cllr Tynan said: “What is happening today is a criminal act against the Irish people. We are bailing out speculators while services are being cut back here.

“We did not cause the debts so why are forced to pay for them?”

Sinn Féin was also due to hold a protest against the payment to the Anglo bondholders today at Daunt Square, while the Ballyhea protestors were to march in the village at 4.30pm.

Ballyhea organiser Diarmuid O’Flynn said the payment was being made by a “suffering people to the vultures and vampires of the financial markets” and had been “sanctioned by our own blackmailed government”.
