Retail sales fell to an historic low this month, according to Retail Excellence Ireland.
The group is predicting a 6.7% drop in trading for the month, compared to the same period last year.
The decline in consumer spending is being put down to the IMF bailout and the most austere budget ever, as well as the cold snap.
But the January sales are expected to bring a flurry of late shopping.
