Celtic striker 'not interested in records'

Celtic striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink is refusing to set a goals target for himself in his first season with the club.

The Dutch international made an instant impact after his move from PSV Eindhoven last month, scoring in his first three games for the Hoops, including the 3-2 Champions League defeat at Manchester United.

The 27-year-old had been viewed as a direct replacement for John Hartson, who joined West Brom this summer after five successful years in Glasgow.

But the former FC Twente forward, who missed the single-goal win over FC Copenhagen last night with an ankle injury, wants to be judged as his own man.

Vennegoor of Hesselink told the Celtic View: “You play football for the fans and that is the main thing.

“People like to compare other players with each other, but I said in the beginning that I am Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink – I am myself and I am doing my own things.

“At PSV and Twente, I had a good relationship with the fans and I just hope it is going to be the same here.

“I am going to try to earn my own place here. I am not trying to achieve records or say: ‘I want to score so many goals like him or him.’

“I am going to do my own thing and earn my own recognition from the fans. They support me and the team and I like to give something back.

“I hope they remember me when I am very old and in a good way.

“I am doing my best right now and hope they are going to remember me as a good person and a good player.”
