13 people are now confirmed to have died in the Selby rail crash.

Investigators are trying to find out how a Land Rover came to be on the East Coast mainline, causing the disaster.

It appears that the vehicle which went on to the track was a Land Rover which had been pulling a trailer with a blue Renault estate car on it.

Inspector Steve Page, of Humberside Police, said a Land Rover towing a trailer careered down the embankment at around 6am.

The front end of the Land Rover became stuck on the track and it was hit by the passenger train.

Police said the Land Rover driver had called emergency services moments before the crash to tell them his vehicle was on the train tracks.

A police operator heard the man shout "the train's coming" and then there was a bang. Insp Page said:

"The driver of the land rover suffered whiplash which we believe to be minor. He was a very, very lucky man to get out of his vehicle.

At some stage, he may have tried to go down the track to warn an oncoming train although this is not confirmed."
