John Gilligan is back in the dock this morning as his trial resumes at the Special Criminal Court.

The 48-year-old is charged with the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin and faces 15 additional counts of allegedly importing cannabis and firearms.

Although the court's three-judge panel has already heard several weeks of evidence, it really has only been the tip of the iceberg. The prosecution team have so far dealt with largely logistical evidence about the murder and about the drugs business Gilligan is alleged to have been involved in.

However, with 175 witnesses in all to give evidence at the trial, the more enlightening testimony is yet to come. The prosecution is hoping that the State's supergrasses will convince the court of Gilligan's alleged guilt when they get on the stand.

For his part, Gilligan emphatically denies his part in the killing, or in any drugs business.

The trial is expected to run for several more weeks.
