Supreme Court grounds Thaksin
Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who faces a slew of court cases, has been barred from leaving the country by order of the Supreme Court.
Mr Thaksin and his wife Pojaman are due to appear in court on Tuesday to face charges of abuse of power and conflict of interest in the purchase of prime Bangkok real estate during his time in office.
Toppled in a 2006 military coup, Mr Thaksin, whose foreign interests include Manchester City, faces other court action related to alleged corruption and misuse of power.
Rakkiat Pattanaphong, secretary-general of the Supreme Court, said today that Mr Thaksin’s request to go abroad was “not justified at this time”.
He did not elaborate.
