Surge in GAA players accessing mental health services

The number of county players accessing the Gaelic Players Association's mental health services trebled this year.

By the end of October, 94 players had engaged with the programme, which provides a dedicated phone line, one on one counseling, and residential treatment for players suffering distress.

This represented a 203% growth in the number engaging directly with the service this year.

The GPA says the death by suicide of Galway hurler Niall Donohue in October has sharpened the focus of its challenge and it intends to establish a specific campaign next year aimed at encouraging more players to engage with the service.
