Croatia's biggest mafia godfather has died in a shoot-out in Zagreb.

Vjeko Slisko, known as the 'king of the gaming machines', controlled most mafia activities in the city after he learned his trade in Frankfurt in the 1980s.

A spokesperson for the Croatian ministry of the interior said the shooting was a "typical mafia hit".

The hitman - a Belgian - was shot dead by one of Slisko's bodyguards as he made his getaway. Slisko, who was 40, had survived four attempts on his life in eight years.
