Meehan wanted to kill himself, says mother

The mother of Craig Meehan said today she has talked her son out of a second suicide attempt following his conviction for possessing child pornography.

The mother of Craig Meehan said today she has talked her son out of a second suicide attempt following his conviction for possessing child pornography.

Meehan (aged 22) was arrested following the huge search for his former partner’s daughter, Shannon Matthews, earlier this year.

Police found child abuse images on his home computer after Shannon vanished from her home in Dewsbury Moor, West Yorkshire, England in February.

Meehan was jailed for 20 weeks after he was found guilty of possessing the images but was released from custody immediately because of the amount of time he had spent in prison waiting for his trial.

Since his release he has been living at a secret location.

Today, his mother Alice said he had recently considered killing himself.

She told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “He was very low when I spoke to him on Saturday, he was thinking about doing something stupid. Everything is going around in his head.”

Ms Meehan said her son had still not got over the death of his father 10 months ago.

She also said her son had told her he still loved Shannon’s mother, Karen Matthews (aged 33).

Shannon was found after a massive police hunt 24 days after she went missing.

Her mother is due to go on trial in November alongside Meehan’s uncle Michael Donovan (aged 40) of Lidgate Gardens, Batley Carr, West Yorkshire, England.

Both deny charges of kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.
