The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has told the Dáil that the Government is determined to tackle organised crime gangs.

Mr Ahern was responding to questions from Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny, who claimed the collapse of a murder trial at the Central Criminal Court earlier this week posed the biggest threat to Irish democracy since the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin in 1996.

"This is a challenge, a challenge which will be taken on," Mr Ahern said. "The minister has stated that very clearly. The Garda Commissioner and his senior colleagues have already had a high-level conference and we will deal with this issue as quickly and as promptly as we can."
