Householders urged to recycle Christmas and New Year waste

Householders are being urged to recycle as much as possible of the mountain of waste produced over the Christmas and New Year periods.

Householders are being urged to recycle as much as possible of the mountain of waste produced over the Christmas and New Year periods.

Waste such as wrapping paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, drinks cans, newspapers and magazines can be brought to recycling centres, while glass bottles and jars can also be taken to bottle banks.

The Repak recycling organisation has increased its collections to cater for an estimated 30% increase in recycling over the festive period.

The organisation has also warned people not to abandon recyclable waste near bring banks if capacity at the sites is full.

Repak said material dumped in this fashion often ended up in landfill rather than being recycled and people who leave waste beside bring banks could face hefty litter fines.

It said householders should instead bring the waste home with them and wait until the bring bank is serviced or, alternatively, visit one of the 80 special Repak Green Christmas Centres established nationwide.
