A man was being questioned by detectives tonight in connection with the fatal stabbing of a well-known Co Waterford horse breeder.

Gardaí investigating the death of Dick Forristal, 66, whose body was discovered in his home at Carrigavantry Stud near Tramore, confirmed a man was arrested.

Officers believe Mr Forristal may have surprised a raider, or several robbers, when he returned to his home yesterday after attending the funeral of Tara Whelan, aged 17, who was killed in a bomb blast in Turkey.

A number of burglaries were believed to have been carried out in the Tramore area recently.

A friend of Mr Forristal discovered the mourner’s body at the rural farmhouse around 2.30pm yesterday.

The man, who was arrested in the Waterford area, is being held for questioning under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He may be held for up to six hours initially, and a further six if required.

Gardaí launched a murder inquiry late last night and sealed off the farmhouse and several fields around it for technical examination.

A preliminary post-mortem examination by the State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy has revealed he was stabbed to death.

Mr Forristal was a well-known horse breeder and his horse, Blue Corrig, was scheduled to race in the Galway Festival next week.

He was one of hundreds of people who attended Tara’s funeral in Kilmeaden, several miles from his home.
