Emergency meeting to discuss human trafficking in Europe

Irish MEPs will debate the issue of illegal human trafficking at an emergency session of the European Parliament today.

This comes in the wake of last weekend’s immigration tragedy in Wexford, where eight people died.

The mood among the Irish delegates in Strasbourg is one of determination to act against the gangs who run the human trafficking trade and to put in place a common European policy on immigration.

Irish MEPs have been meeting throughout the week and agree that the development of a fortress mentality in Ireland and across Europe is pushing refugees into the hands of traffickers.

A reversal of this and the implementation of a firm but humane immigration policy will be central to today’s debate.
