Sir Gerard, joint-favourite for the totesport Cambridgeshire, is set to bypass the Newmarket showpiece after suffering a minor setback.

Trainer James Fanshawe has announced the three-year-old, who was recently purchased by Sheikh Mohammed, is unlikely to make the line-up due to a foot problem. Sir Gerard, winner of the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot for previous owner Rose-Anne Galligan, will now be aimed at a Group Three back at Headquarters on Champions Day.

In a statement, Fanshawe confirmed: “Sir Gerard is unlikely to make the Cambridgeshire.

“He has an infected corn in his left fore foot and is likely to be aimed at the Unicorn Asset Management Darley Stakes on Champions Day at Newmarket on October 14.”

Sir Gerard had headed the sponsors’ betting for the Cambridgeshire at 7-1 along with Smart Enough.
