Jim Smith has revealed he has left Derby with regret after six years in charge.

Assistant boss Colin Todd will take over but Smith says he turned down the position of director of football because he felt he had ‘‘more to offer’’ the Pride Park club.

‘‘It is with great regret I have left my position as manager of Derby. This is a really sad day for me,’’ he said.

‘‘The chairman Lionel Pickering offered me the position as director of football. I appreciate that but feel I have more to offer the club.

‘‘I will always appreciate Derby and their magnificent fans for everything they’ve done for me and my family.

‘‘I sincerely wish the club and the players every success this season and in the future. I hope to say more at a later date.’’
