Strong winds delayed the start of the second day’s play at the Solheim Cup in Sweden today.
Gusts of around 35mph caused some damage on the Halmstad course south of Gothenburg and officials were meeting at 9am local time – 55 minutes after the second series of foursomes had been due to begin – to review the situation.
They also said there was no possibility of play before 10am.
In a repeat of one of the practice days at last year’s Ryder Cup in Ireland spectators and media were not even allowed in at first because of the danger of tented structures being blown over and greenkeeping staff were on the course clearing debris.
Holders America led Europe 4 1/2-3 1/2 overnight after an opening day played in cold, wet and windy conditions.
The wind was nowhere near as bad as it was this morning, however, and a lengthy delay had the likely knock-on effect of sending the scheduled afternoon fourballs into a Sunday finish, followed by the 12 concluding singles.
