Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will ask the United Nations later to recognise a Palestinian state.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will ask the United Nations later to recognise a Palestinian state.

The application for full UN membership will then be considered by the Security Council, but the US is expected to use its veto.

Abbas will set out his case in a speech to the UN General Assembly.
