Stacy Bergman fired a three under par 69 to give South Africa a four shot lead over Sweden going into the final round of the 2006 Women’s World Amateur Golf Team Championships at Stellenbosch, South Africa, October 18-21.
Ireland moved up one place to 23rd after improving on yesterday’s total by a further three strokes.
Once again, Cork’s Claire Coughlan led the Irish challenge with an impressive level par 72. She birdied eight and 11 but suffered a wretched double bogey six on the difficult 13th.
She completed play with a brave birdie three on 18 while Beaverstown’s Martina Gillen birdied three and 14 to record her second 74 of the tournament.
Tricia Mangan once again found the going tough on the back nine coming home in 44 for an 81.
Bergman’s teamate Kelli Shean recorded a level par 72 while Sweden leapfrogged Japan, France, England and Germany into second place with a 7 birdie charge 66 from Caroline Westrup while teammate Anna Nordqvist shot 72. The final round of the tournament will be played tomorrow.
