Urgent action required to get EU back on track - FSB

A scathing attack on economic growth in the European Union has been welcomed by the FSB as a shot in the arm for the flagging Lisbon Agenda.

A report for the European Commission by former Dutch PM Wim Kok has warned urgent steps must be taken to counter the slow progress made by the EU and its member states.

The paper, Facing the Challenge, calls for a reduction in the administrative burden, improvements in the quality of legislation, more start-ups and a more supportive environment for business.

FSB NI policy chairman, Wilfred Mitchell said: “The FSB is pleased to see that important figures within the EU are starting to wake up to vital role enterprise plays in Europe.

“We agree with Wim Kok that there needs to be an unravelling of the red tape that strangles innovation and puts paid to the truly free movement of goods.

“Time is running out for the Lisbon Agenda. The sustainability of the European economy depends on creating a fertile environment for enterprise, which will in turn create jobs and promote long term growth.”
